| 内容記述 | Narrative when-clauses do not have the same semantic functions as temporal when-clauses, according to several previous studies such as Declerck, R.（1991; 1997）. Usually narrative clauses have the same form as temporal clauses but should not be treated as ordinary temporal clauses, because they have many charac-teristics in common with main clauses. In fact, few studies have discussed the fact that some languages other than English have narrative clauses. Japanese toki-clauses have a use that is called "monogatari-no-bun" in Teramura（1992）and "toki-no-settei" in Masuoka（1997）. In this paper I will contend that this use corresponds to narrative when-clauses in English and therefore they should be called 'narrative toki-clauses'. |
