To achieve this purpose, the researcher interviewed five students. The questions were about recognition of the function of language, language acquisition, and linguistic ability.  As a result of these interviews, the following was evident. The students have traditional view of language and linguistic ability. In other words, their views are “language as substance” and that nursery teachers must teach correct language. However, recently, early childhood education in Japan is based on “language as expression” - the idea that children become to able to communicate their own thoughts in words.
