Because of this, Israel had even effectively tabooed any performances of Wagner’s music until recently. A detailed examination, however, reveals that there was no connection between Wagner’s anti-Semitism and the atrocities conducted by the Nazis. And even though Wagner himself was undoubtedly a malicious anti-Zionist, we can understand that his works reflect internationalism with no links with racism. Such contradiction between the composer and his works is a good example of “contrapuntal reading,” which has been argued by Daniel Barenboim, who dared to play a Wagner piece in Israel, as well as by Edward Said.
