The new Commonwealth enacted the White Australia Policy, thereby ensuring that Australian immigrants would be not only European, but predominantly Anglo-Celtic. In the immediate post WW-II period, however, labor shortages made for a change in the policy and in the mid-1970s it was finally abolished.
