The index contains 53,956 placenames in  kanji and  kana.\n　The database for the Japanese Historical Gazetteer was digitized by enteringkanji ,  kana and romanized place names, the geographical relationships of historical administrative areas, their relationship to current administrative districts, andlatitude and longitude, based on the   Dainihon Chimeijisho  index.\n　The authors are planning to merge place names and the digitized index of theindex of places （Chi no Bu）of the  Kojiruien, a  1914 encyclopedia, in order tocomplete the place names of ancient Japan.
