Accordingly a database of the index of Dainihon Chimeijisho ( The Dictionary of PlaceNames in Greater Japan )edited by Togo Yoshida in 1900(Meiji 30)was created.  This work provides a detailed explanation of historical place names and thenames of natural features, and changes in them. The index contains 53,956 placenames in kanji and kana.  The database for the Japanese Historical Gazetteer was digitized by enteringkanji , kana and romanized place names, the geographical relationships of historical administrative areas, their relationship to current administrative districts, andlatitude and longitude, based on the Dainihon Chimeijisho index.  The authors are planning to merge place names and the digitized index of theindex of places (Chi no Bu)of the Kojiruien, a 1914 encyclopedia, in order tocomplete the place names of ancient Japan. Additionally it is planned to marge theShikinaisya (the 2,842 shrines registered with the Jinmyocho of Engishiki )with theDainihon Chimeijisho.  Finally the characteristics of the place names are analyzed, along with theirdistribution, using place name attributes that comprise the data items in thedictionary. The Japanese historical Gazetteer was constructed using OpenText (DBMS)andthe record structure is adapted XML.}, pages = {19--39}, title = {日本地名辞書の開発と地名属性からの特徴分析}, volume = {21}, year = {2008}, yomi = {マエカワ, タケシ} }
