At a structurallevel, efforts to reduce personnel costs have resulted in the elimination of salesassistants from retail stores have also been a major factor. The use of assistantsdispatched by suppliers has effectively led to the abandonment of the traditional twincore competencies of department stores: collection of merchandise and customerinformation.
