Liberal theology was introduced into Japan between 1880 and 1890 and the members of Kumamoto Band such Michitomo Kanamori （1857-1945）, Tokio Yokoi （1857-1927）, and especially Danjyou Ebina （1860-1946） shifted to the new theology, while Kanzo Uchimura （1861-1930） and Masahisa Uemura （1858-1925） defended orthodox theology.
