Two kinds of words existed in the Middle English period for what we now assign the word ‘nature.’ One was the Anglo-Saxon derived word, ‘kynde’ (also spelt as ‘cunde’ or ‘kinde’), and the other was Latinate ‘nature’, which was introduced through French into the English language around the mid 13th century. Throughout the Middle English period, the use and the meaning of these two words were confused, and ‘kynde’ and ‘nature’ were used indiscriminately with a variety of meanings.
