内容記述 | Albert Cohen formulated the cultural background of juvenile delinquency as the theory of "delinquent subculture." His was the first theory to treat delinquency as a phenomenon peculiar to youth, as distinguished from adult crime. However, the validity of his theory rests upon particular cultural and social conditions. In this regard, Walter Miller and David Matza's criticisms cannot be overlooked. According to Miller, the cultural background of juvenile delinquency is contained within lower class culture. On the other hand, according to Matza, the culture that promotes delinquency is contained within the leisured-classes culture(consumptive culture)as part of dominant culture. While Matza's view is diametrically opposed to that of Miller, neither distinguishes a particular delinquent subculture peculiar to youth. For Cohen, the delinquent subculture is created by youths because they are not socialized by either the parents' class culture nor by the dominant culture. In other words, Cohen's theory of delinquent subculture can have validity during the process when the autonomous reproduction by the working class culture declines, and as such is classified as a theory that exists in the transition stage from Miller to Matza. At the same time, this is also the process in which the difficulty of socialization becomes omnipresent and delinquency spreads irrespective of a specific class. It is here that the new theoretical subject of sociological research on delinquency is to be found. | |||||
